More Grimdark Knights

OK, so things got a little out of hand over the holiday weekend, and I painted all the Knights I had, or at least all the Knights I could find. Enter Grimdark medieval style!

Kind of a clickbaity title, and there's not really enough material here to constitute "porn", but it rhymes...

Wyvern from Reaper

I the last post I was having trouble recalling the name, it's a Wyvern.

It was supposed to be a fast paint, and it was. I started by painting it black, because it's really hard to prime Reaper's Bones any other way, you can't see white on them.  Then I did the quick drybrush, and realized that it still had mold lines... No shits were given and after dry brushing with white I decided that this Wyvern would be orange and red.

Doombull brown as a base on the scales with Ushabti Bone for the wings. Then I used a flesh tone to start adding to the wings, and I layered up some oranges, Troll Slayer and Fire Dragon Bright.

To try and draw attention to the head I painted the tongue an opposite color, if the model was better I would have gone crazy on the face, but it's not and the detail is soft.  To finish I used oil washes on the wings and body, then used a Q-tip to remove the excess.

It's definitely ready to kill players in DnD, but the poor sculpt, (there's no good viewing angle), and low detail made me call this job done. I'll add some dirt to the base the next time I'm basing something.

Metro Entertainment Marine (and a troll)

The local shop gave me a couple Space Marines! As a thank you, I painted the "Metro Entertainment Space Marine". I also finished a big troll from BONES IV...

Painting Miniatures With Oil Paints Pt. 2

OK, first test drive of the oils complete. Here's what I learned.

1. Getting buttery smooth blends is easy (it's like cheating).
2. Getting buttery smooth paint is hard.
3. Having a limited palette is not so limiting.
4. Priming with black acrylic leads to difficult coverage with light paint, especially once thinned (I primed in black because the BONES are hard to see with any other color, but given their hydrophobic nature you could probably just rock'n-roll (future tests will examine this).
5. Use care when laying down colors as they remain active for a very long time (it's oil...)
6. Bob Ross used to talk about thick paints sticking to thin, or maybe vice versa, I now know what he was going on about.
7. Stippling is your friend.
8. Texture can be cool.

Nudity Ahead

So... I found out that some friends at work are starting a D&D campaign, and one is playing a Tiefling. Having been a BONES 4 supporter I have no shortage of table-top quality miniatures, and after digging through my box of stuff, I found what I was looking for! Claire wanted her to be pink, with green hair and black eyes... (to keep it all PG you'll have to click the thing to see more)

BONES 4! The Adventure of Mr Bones

The BONES have arrived.  It's an insane amount of stuff. The material has changed from earlier Bones in that it is now visible, and possibly slightly harder.  It seems that there is a lot of variation in the quality of the process, some of the little guys are good, some even great, but some is poo. A lot of the Bones specific stuff seems alright. It does smooth bug well (see pig and cart).
