Finally Finished Fanatics

The title says it all! The Moon Clan Fanatics are done. I still didn't get a good photo booth, but I did use a real camera instead of the cellphone nonsense. We'll start with the overview shot.

Moon Clan Fanatics
The next set of shots is front and back of the "newer" group (they're plastic). I think the white balance is better in the following shots.
Newer Plastic Models Front
Rear
These guys were fun to paint, and the one in the middle was originally done with a different technique, using more gray than the subsequent models. These models are slightly more absurd with really big balls and really small bodies and heads, which make them look more crazy, also the chains are really long (which the light plastic allows for).

Below are the older metal fanatics, and I really like them. The sculpts are better and have bigger bodies, especially bigger heads with more facial expression. Also the balls are smaller, so they're less absurd, which is probably why they changed them. [The fragile metal chain can't support the weight of a much larger ball.]

Older Metal Fanatics
With these guys I added some "moons" to two of them. The moons were part of a Reaper chains and weapons pack that had spiked chains and other fun stuff. Turns out the "moon" crescents look dope here on the Moon Clan.

Scibor Monstrous Miniatures Showcase

The Fanatics are almost done, and I don't want to spoil the final reveal by doing a mid-week update on them. With that in mind I thought I'd showcase my collection of Scibor Miniatures. I really like the Scibor stuff, especially the more gnarly ones since they tend to be a bit more gritty than some of the other things out there. The other thing I like from Scibor are the Dwarfs, especially the ones listed as Dwarf Lord,  I've got 4 in a box waiting for prep work... without any further ado, here's the goods.
Scibor Display (cover off)

I really like the shaman dude. I also really like how the bases came out for the snail people, especially with the gross "snail trails" visible in the side and back shots. You can read about how I made the bases by clicking here, and here.
Sibor snails and company
Check out the slime!
Scibor gang, rear view.

As usual my photography could probably use a bit more effort, but I think the shots aren't too bad.

Fanatical Update

Getting reeeally close now.
Some keen eyed readers may recognize this fanatic...
Fanatics don't need to see!
The third and final of the new line
Bell fanatic
Inverted fanatic
His teeth are too clean...
Screaming skull fanatic
Fanatics
That's all for now. I think once I'm done the touch-ups and put in the grass and finish the skin I'll take photos with the real camera.

Fanatic WIP

Still a WIP, I might almost finish! Particularly if I stop adding stuff... like the moon clan cresents hanging from bits of chain.

Copper VS Gold

Sometimes you learn things by accident. Today's case study involves dry brushing Citadel's Screaming Bell onto a blue-green base (which gives a nice aged coppery patina look). What's cool is that if you wash Gehenna's Gold with Carroburg Crimson, the metallic parts are the same!

All right, as the above photos clearly FAIL to show (with the possible exception of the third), the above mentioned processes yield the same result. Photographing quasi metallic spheres with a mobile phone is a fools errand...

Good luck,
HMP

Fanatic Update

Awesome 1st day. Did lots of good work, and also published a post about a metallic paint comparison. Here are the guys, note the high degree of order and discipline! ;)

Black Paint Comparison Citadel vs MSP-HD

The executive summary is as follows; Not all blacks are created equal!

I discovered this essentially by accident! I was low on black paint and while placing an order with Reaper Miniatures I added some paint to my basket, to be specific, Solid Black 29843. This specific paint is part of Reapers "Master Series Paint HD" (MSP-HD) line. I didn't realize this at the time, and I don't know how the HD differ from their other paints (on the bottle it says High Density Pigment). I have several of MSPs now and I like them all, I also have one of the "BONES" formula, but I'm not sure how it differs since I haven't used it yet.
Anyhow, wile blocking the Broodlord I switched blacks, and it was immediately obvious.
Citadel Abaddon Black vs MSP-HD Solid Black

Since a picture is worth a thousand words see above, it's not the lighting, the MSP-HD Solid Black is super flat. I'll add more data as I get it.

Metallic Paint Comparison

THIS ARTICLE IS NOW OUTDATED SEE NEW POST

Sometimes I forget which gold is really "brass" and which silver is really "blue steel". With that in mind I quickly painted up some sprue. Left to right Reaper MSP BONES Blackened Steel, GW Leadbelcher, GW Ironbreaker, GW Runefang Steel, GW Gehenna's Gold, GW Retributor Gold, GW Auric Armour Gold, GW Screaming Bell, and finally GW Golden Griffon.

The results are as follows. Blackened Steel has a hint of blue, while Leadbelcher is more of a gray. Ironbreaker is very close to Runefang Steel, but better consistency paint. Gehenna's is brassy, while Retributor is a warm gold and Auric Armour is yellow gold. Screaming bell is an awesome copper, and finally the Griffon is just random metallic beige?

Keen eyed readers will see 3 small swatches at the end. They are all Tamiya paints. X-10 Gun Metal, X-11 Chrome and XF-16 Flat Aluminum.  The Tamiya paints are hard to work with as they are thinned with alcohols, but the X-10 Gun Metal is metallic black, white the chrome is a nice silver as is the flat aluminum. On bigger surfaces the differences between the chrome and flat Al become apparent (the flat, is flat).

Happy New Year

Long time, no painting. All right, back from a little break with the family and such. I've decided to give myself a challenge, paint 5 fanatics in 3 days... We'll try for daily updates.
