So that's it. The last three are a lot better than the rest, but that's what 2 years of painting can do. My tips are as follows; get your balls out of your purse and keep painting!

Space Hulk Terminators

The end of era draws near. Here's a sneak peek of what's coming up.

Blood Angel Terminators
With the last 3 nearing completion I pulled out the "old" guys to take a walk down memory lane. I painted them nearly 2 years ago, and the difference is obvious. I'm really looking forward to completing this project, and playing a game with my new squads.

Power Weapons Part 3

OK, so we've coverd thunder hammers, lightening claws, and now a power sword.  Obviously lightening claws should have a lightening look about them, and a thunder hammer, well, that kinda goes with lightening too, so where does that leave the power sword? Turns out it's lightening too!

Sgt. Lorenzo of Space Hulk

Just a WIP shot of Sgt. Lorenzo, he is the final terminator from Space Hulk (a board game).

More NMM gold (still trying)

I really hope to  do a shoot of the most recent 3 figures against my first attempt at painting the Blood Angel's almost 2 years ago. The old ones are in a box, and I haven't looked at them during this process (unfinished squads dont go on display), so it will be interesting to see if/how I've progressed.

Stay tuned,

Brother Claudio

While the majority of the few remaining "normal sized" Americans spent the long weekend working on their obesity (trying to avoid or attain it), I focused on power weapons, specifically lightening claws.

Power Weapons Contd.

My spouse saw my lightening attempt and couldn't identify what it was, not a big deal, after all, what does she know about power weapons? My brother saw my lightening attempt and was unimpressed; THAT'S a problem. He's usually pretty supportive, so his opinion actually matters (unlike the spouses).

Power Weapons "Lightening"

After 3 attempts and 2 hours I've had it with lightening. On the upside I now know what not to do.

Hard to focus with the phone

In the future I would drink more coffee sooner, (just to the point where you shake). Then do the lightening, squiggles make themselves!

Sergeant Gideon

Brothers, to me!

Look out punks, Blood Angel Terminators are coming in hot.

Space Hulk Terminators

It's been a while since I painted a Blood Angel, because the last time I tried to paint 6 at once, which probably brought in some kind of PTSD...

Dwarf Lord Morlik

Scibor's Dwarf Lord Morlik, or as we call him, Horlik, is done.

Scibor's Dwarf, Lord Morlik

This was the first figure where I really tried had to mix NMM and TMM in the same part of the figure.

Dwarf Lord Molrik

Nothing like starting out a project only to realize that you managed to assemble the model "wrong". Especially when said model only consists of 4 pieces! One could argue that you screwed up 50% of it, which is pretty Proctor. Carefully examine the picture below and see if you can spot the difference between it and the one that follows.

Scibor Dwarf, WIP

Sometimes in order to move forward you have to look to the past. Here's what I mean. I painted my first Scibor Dwarf a while ago, and since I want them, (all the Dwarfs), to look like a group, it's important to examine the old while considering the new.

Scibor Dwarfs; past (left) and present (right)

I knew I was going to keep the metallic gold, and I knew that the cloak colors should be vibrant. I also knew that the armor should be deep blacks, and mottled up all the way to bright steel. One of the things I wanted to change was how the gold is offset from the "enamel". Here the enamel is a strong blue, which matches the tone of the cloak, I got this wrong the first time. The brown enamel doesn't show off the gold enough, in fact it just looks like gold.

Scibor Dwarfs

He's only shorter because he needs a base.

Mixed non/metallic metal on cloak

The furs look very similar.

I dont know how I got the furs to match so well; I didnt take notes the first time.

Fur recipe (current): Rhinox Hide, Mournfang Brown, Tallarn Sand (maybe Zandri Dust), White Scar (mixed with the final tan-sand). That's the list of required paint. Method: base with Rhinox, layer with Mournfang, drybrush the final highlights.

Prime Time: Scibor Edition

Now, the plan was to paint a Space Marine, but I was digging through my box of unpainted projects and I saw my Scibor Dwarfs. If you're new to the blog, or simply haven't been paying attention, here's the deal; Dwarfs are awesome. Beer, big beards, gold, hammers, the list goes on and on!

"We Dwarf are natural sprinters, very dangerous over short distances." -Gimli-

One of these is not like the others...

I primed them all, since they were already cleaned, liquid green stuffed, and all that good stuff, I also primed the undead thing. I hope to paint at least one of them this week to add to my Scibor display case.

A Horde of Grots

I don't know if 10 constitutes a horde, but it'll have to do. This particular horde is probably equally dangerous to both friend and foe, so vanguard for them. I did some more work after I took these pictures, but they are finally, really, truly, done (almost).

Grots with Gunz

It's not clear if everyone can see; sounds safe.

Moon Clan

Note "Horns" is getting ready to mount up

Well that's all for now. I also finished the Boyz, so I'll be doing proper photos soon to update the "Gallery" pages.

Are they Grots or Gretchin?

So, which is it? Turns out it doesn't matter, especially after you attach 5 of them to one base, then it's just a mob.

Gretchin Mob (see, no difference)

Ugh, that bottle.

Surprise! Ork Skull
All right, one down and one to go...

Let''s Make A Gang

Denim, leather and patches, that's all you need to be a gang. Good thing because that's all these guys are going to get.

Moon Clan Grots!

So yeah, painting angry moons on the back of the denim, it's actually pretty fun. Some are more complete than others. If I keep adding stuff I'll never get them done. Maybe a deadline would help.

Nov. 1. Grots must be done!

There, I just made a deadline.

Things I Don't Need Vol. 1

In this new mini series (we'll see how long this persists) I'll cover, Things I Don't Need, But Bought Anyhow.

Last night was the mini painting social at my local shop, and I saw this cool box of mystery Terminators. It's like buying baseball (or any other collecting card) where in theory one knows all the possible outcomes, but one doesn't really know what's in the box (package) until after you purchase. Given that I already have 3 unpainted Terminators from Space Hulk, I don't need more, but I sure did buy one.

I ended up scoring a pretty sweet model! It wasn't the Lightening Claws, or Storm Shield/ Thunder Hammer, both of which would be sweet, but a very cool figure none the less. Brother Captain Donato. He's one of the "mystery figures" not explicitly shown, so it was a score on one level.

Donato with Helmet

Brother Captain Donato (bare head)

The figure comes with a pretty cool base, and the coice of building it with or without the helm. I plan to do him without the helmet, maybe it can be attached to his belt. He'll be a fine addition to the Space Hulk Blood Angel squad. So while I didn't need another Terminator, I feel like it might have motivated me to finish off the rest of the squad (about bloody time).

Buying minis to paint when you have a backlog, is similar to buying more flies to fish with, it's fun, but doesn't really increase your odds of success on the table (or in the stream) unless you put in the time; but either way it sure beats working.

The Ground Beneath Their Feet

Well, I'm still basing. I hope to actually add little green men to them this week.

Left showing plaster chips, sand, grounds, right shows after Zandri Dust
Nothing new here. I used super glue to attach the large rocks to the base. This way when you add the smaller debris it looks like the bigger rocks are actually buried, otherwise you end up with boulders sitting on top of a field. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just a different look. I added the grit and smaller stuff by running tape around the base and then flooding the bottom with Titebond II Premium Wood Glue, then pouring on the grit stuff (coffee grounds). Once everything had dried I removed the tape and sprayed everything down with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) before washing with 1:1 glue water mixture, to seal the surface. The IPA just helps break the surface tension and makes everything wet better. The finer sand was applied using super glue and covering it with sand.

After washing, dry brushing, and grass!

For painting I based everything with Zandri Dust and then washed with Reikland Fleshshade for the big rocks and Agrax Earthshade for the smaller grit. Added some Nuln Oil here and there. Then dry brushed with mixtures of Ushabti Bone + Zandri Dust, re-washed the big rocks where they got too light, and then added the grass.

That's all that's new.

Der Goblin Komme

I dunno if "der" is the correct article for Goblin (is goblin even goblin in German?), it's just for fun, like adding random umlauts to words (thanks Lemmy). Anyhow, my mobile is finally repaired, so we're back, and like the title may, or may not, say, "the goblin come".

The Grots are almost finished, but before I do more I need to put them on their base. Basically each base will have 5 Grots, since one group is piggy backing, it's only 4 sets of legs, but the other is a bit congested.

Grots

Denim and Leather

War Cry

Bull Horns and Pot Head (copper eventually)

Everything must have checkers.

So yeah, deciding who goes where is what's next. I also think that the denim jackets should have the clan/gang logo on the back, we'll see. I think before I move on and finish them these decisions need to be made as it will determine what areas need work. Having so many figures on one base kind of means that you need to think about the composition, placement and lighting of the final group, not just the individual pieces.

The other problem with these figures is that they are all looking down and posed in odd positions; the base is going to require lots of terrain bits so that they all face relatively level. What enemy could a Goblin possibly be looking down upon? Ants?

Tonight is the miniature painting social night at my local game store. Looking forward to that. I'll probably bring a new piece as this project has too much going on to cart it around.
