Sergeant Lorenzo

Heroes of the Imperium of Man

So that's it. The last three are a lot better than the rest, but that's what 2 years of painting can do. My tips are as follows; get your balls out of your purse and keep painting!

Space Hulk Terminators

The end of era draws near. Here's a sneak peek of what's coming up.

Blood Angel Terminators
With the last 3 nearing completion I pulled out the "old" guys to take a walk down memory lane. I painted them nearly 2 years ago, and the difference is obvious. I'm really looking forward to completing this project, and playing a game with my new squads.

Power Weapons Part 3

OK, so we've coverd thunder hammers, lightening claws, and now a power sword.  Obviously lightening claws should have a lightening look about them, and a thunder hammer, well, that kinda goes with lightening too, so where does that leave the power sword? Turns out it's lightening too!

Sgt. Lorenzo of Space Hulk

Just a WIP shot of Sgt. Lorenzo, he is the final terminator from Space Hulk (a board game).

More NMM gold (still trying)

I really hope to  do a shoot of the most recent 3 figures against my first attempt at painting the Blood Angel's almost 2 years ago. The old ones are in a box, and I haven't looked at them during this process (unfinished squads dont go on display), so it will be interesting to see if/how I've progressed.

Stay tuned,

Brother Claudio

While the majority of the few remaining "normal sized" Americans spent the long weekend working on their obesity (trying to avoid or attain it), I focused on power weapons, specifically lightening claws.

Power Weapons Contd.

My spouse saw my lightening attempt and couldn't identify what it was, not a big deal, after all, what does she know about power weapons? My brother saw my lightening attempt and was unimpressed; THAT'S a problem. He's usually pretty supportive, so his opinion actually matters (unlike the spouses).

Focus on the lightening

Power Weapons "Lightening"

After 3 attempts and 2 hours I've had it with lightening. On the upside I now know what not to do.

Hard to focus with the phone

In the future I would drink more coffee sooner, (just to the point where you shake). Then do the lightening, squiggles make themselves!

Sergeant Gideon

Brothers, to me!

Look out punks, Blood Angel Terminators are coming in hot.

Space Hulk Terminators

It's been a while since I painted a Blood Angel, because the last time I tried to paint 6 at once, which probably brought in some kind of PTSD...

Things I Don't Need Vol. 1

In this new mini series (we'll see how long this persists) I'll cover, Things I Don't Need, But Bought Anyhow.

Last night was the mini painting social at my local shop, and I saw this cool box of mystery Terminators. It's like buying baseball (or any other collecting card) where in theory one knows all the possible outcomes, but one doesn't really know what's in the box (package) until after you purchase. Given that I already have 3 unpainted Terminators from Space Hulk, I don't need more, but I sure did buy one.

I ended up scoring a pretty sweet model! It wasn't the Lightening Claws, or Storm Shield/ Thunder Hammer, both of which would be sweet, but a very cool figure none the less. Brother Captain Donato. He's one of the "mystery figures" not explicitly shown, so it was a score on one level.

Donato with Helmet

Brother Captain Donato (bare head)

The figure comes with a pretty cool base, and the coice of building it with or without the helm. I plan to do him without the helmet, maybe it can be attached to his belt. He'll be a fine addition to the Space Hulk Blood Angel squad. So while I didn't need another Terminator, I feel like it might have motivated me to finish off the rest of the squad (about bloody time).

Buying minis to paint when you have a backlog, is similar to buying more flies to fish with, it's fun, but doesn't really increase your odds of success on the table (or in the stream) unless you put in the time; but either way it sure beats working.

Brother "I have too many gems" Noctis

So, here's an update. I sat down to do some painting on the weekend (it was raining), and I thought that I'd be able to bang out all the gems. That didn't happen. In fact I just kept finding more, on this one guy! Even now there's two more on his upper back left shoulder that I completely missed! FML.
I think the knee is upside down...

Hip guards
The gun and the wrist turned out pretty nice
So many gems.
The ones on the side are annoyingly difficult

Blood Angels want YOU!

So that's all the news. This weekend will be good for painting too, I have to take care of A (she's having mouth surgery).

Blood Angels Terminators... Update

Not much to say here. It's really just a photo update of my Space Hulk Terminators. Everything is color blocked, and the armor is the only thing done. Other than that, every detail essentially needs to be addressed. Gulp. Not to mention the two sergeants and Brother Claudio. Oh, all the eyes are done.
I guess the dead Stealer isn't color blocked, also I'm going to keep his chest really white, so it looks like porcelain.
Looks like OSHA is alive and well in the 41st millennium (caution paint on chain fist???)

Bolter needs drilling, all the bolters need drilling

Gotta make that into something to read

He's cool, I love the gold and cool blue/white of the wings

Not looking forward to all those purity seals

Space Hulk Blood Angels Painting Guide (Pt. 2)

In my last article I said to paint anything that you don't know what to do with white. I retract that statement. An astute reader pointed out to me that white is a bitch, and it gets chalky easily. Better advice is to just do nothing and sort it out later.

Battle brothers
So we left off with laying down the base red. The next step was Agrax Earthshade wash all over. Then make a glaze with the base and start highlighting. (I use Liquitex Matte medium, 1 drop from the giant bottle to 1 brush loaded with paint, and then add water to the point that it flows well, thinner than paint and thicker than milk, maybe heavy cream). Just do the parts that should be lighter, and think about how the pant sits when you take the brush off the model (you will leave more paint here, so that will be your lightest spot). Once that's done add a drop of Mephiston Red to your mix and do more highlights (repeat above). Once that's done add a drop of Troll Slayer Orange (repeat above). Then add a drop of Averland Sunset, and work the edges (sometimes 2 or 3 coats).
The progress is real
This takes ages, but the results speak for themselves.

Space Hulk Blood Angels Painting Guide (Pt. 1)

Everyone does a how to guide, so I'll play along. I like to start by blocking out all my major parts with some color before moving forward, I think it helps define how the mini is going to turn out in the end. For these guys I'm using a dark and sinister scheme that my teacher came up with.
The base is Khorne red (that's a secret), so cover all the armor plate with that, then go ahead and do all the little bits. The things that will be gold are blocked out in yellow Averland Sunset, skulls are white, chains and joints are black etc.. And that's it. Anything that you don't know what to do, you should just paint that white too, other colors go down better on white than on black, so you're just doing yourself a favor for later (P.S. I prime in gray, that way you can always start with a wash to help see your detail, GW likes to prime in black because it makes you use more paint, and, if you have a 1000pt army to paint it helps speed painting).
Brother Goriel
Also, I don't usually disassemble and paint parts separately, but the OCD was strong last night and I had to get the back of every part.

The Terminators are coming!

As the title suggests, the Terminators are indeed coming. I have six of them on cork right now, and not one of them is near being done. Totally not following the DMGWLFP mantra.
On the advice of a pro, these are a little darker than the "official" Blood Angel paint scheme, (although the crappy lighting and cell phone camera don't really reveal it).
Blood Angel Terminators
The real issue with these guys is getting all the hues similar so that the squad looks cohesive. This is turning out to be somewhat difficult. The other "hard' part is deciding how far to stray from the Space Hulk paint scheme on the back of the rule book. GW tends to make every skull, chain, rope, and trinket appear to be gilded. I'm more inclined to move toward other looks, more industrial chains, and real looking skulls. I have until about 3 pm (kickoff) to work on them.
