The Grot Walker "Accidents Happen"

It's done. I wasn't sure it was finished, but I painted the base rim black, so it must be done (I think that's a rule or something). Proudly presenting "Accidents Happen".

Our hero has commandeered an Imperial Guard Scout, he's had too much mushroom tea and it's got as heck of a blind spot...

Improved Monday

I hope to improve Monday by simply having this post go live by then. Remember kids, aim low, meet your expectations, don't be disappointed.

I've begun the "paint chipping" in earnest.

The process is relatively straightforward, especially since the model already has a number of washes. Coming back in with the base tone provides enough contrast, and then going inside that with a nice gray, makes ok chipping.

Below is a "before" which is really just the side I haven't started yet. Going one panel at a time seems to make it easier to not miss too much.

And, after.

That's all for now. Respect others and wear a G-D mask...

Grots Inside

Pretty £ucking great eh. Ya like that? Here's the jam.
As you read the following, hum M&M... You don't, want to £uck with Graw-ots, because Graw-ots, will £ucking kill you...
Haha. Getting closer. Next is chipping and weathering and grease grime, and, most importantly, Grotification.

Lost is Found

That which was lost has been found! It was in a safe place.

Today, with said recovered item in hand, I labored, which was fitting, as it was Labor day... Recall the previous efforts had yielded the following, which while not terrible, failed to convey the madness required by the piece.
Enter the goggles. Goggles are a universal key to crazy.
The appropriate level of crazy is essentially a free byproduct of simply donning them.
Just by looking at his face you can imagine the scream eminating from him. Totally oblivious to his trampled comrade, a combination of crazed bloodlust that is always accompanied by a 1000 yard stare, coupled with the seduction of far too much power for any one Grot to yield. He's the Joker of the 41st millennium...

"HE HE WHO HA HA, GET SOME, DAKKA-DAKKA, DAKKA?"

I Lost My Head

I don't often lose stuff, in fact, I can't recall the last time I lost anything!  So you can understand my dismay when I failed to locate my Grot walker pilot's head this morning...
I'm totally gutted. I had big plans for that head, I was hoping to paint the goggles a vibrant orange and go all out on the face. I really wanted the eyes to pop, contrasted against the green skin with the drab walker below.
After reexamining all the heads I had left I chose this guy with a skull hat. I'm not sure that this face conveys the same feeling as the other, who looked crazy!
So I'm not sure what to do.
I'm tempted to just buy another box of Grots, but maybe that's a bit extreme. I still have to do a more thorough search of my work area, but I'm not optimistic, since I don't recall the last time I saw it. I figured I had put it in a safe place. Sometimes my safe places end up being safe hiding places.

Grot Tanks

I've been having so much fun converting the Sentinel Scout into a captured piece of armor for tbe Grots, I figured I should make an entire armored division! Enter Airfix 1:76 scale tank kits.
These things are too small for Space Marines, but they totally hit the mark for Grots. It should be a lot easier than building tanks from scratch, but they will still require heavy modifications.

Reviews to come.

Accidents Happen (Walker pt. 7)

More of a show and tell than a proper update (Ed. Thus is a stupid opening line, all blogs are show and tell, it's not fine litereture). I further developed the "TP-mache" lump, and applied a bunch of texture. Some grays on the rocks and bits, and Doom Bull brown on the "dirt". A whiff of Agrax here and there, and things were looking pretty good. There was some gentle drybrushing, probably with Zandri Dust.

The addition of the squashed comrade was either pure genius, or pure stupidity. To quite Bob Ross, "we dont make mistakes, we have happy accidents". Which brings us to the title of today's post, "Accidents Happen". Keen observers will notice that Dobby has been squished while facing the walker, but in he should have been charging the enemy... perhaps he heard a noise and turned, only in time to see the cause of his gristly death

I'm fairly certain that this is the perfect title for this piece. The reasons for this are twofold; 1) it correctly depicts the scene, and 2) it's how we arrived at the situation we currently find ourselves in.

Regardless of whether he should have been coming or going, he's not moving now.

So that about sums it up. Until next time. Dont miss good while looking for perfect. DMGWLFP

Scout Pt. 3

The strongest Grot in the world! This is what the title would be if it wasn't part of a series.

Today I decided to attempt to carve a grot arm out of a human arm. Sounds impossible, and that may be true, but as of right now it appears to be working.

I forgot to do a full before and after, but I have the left, right comparison, which is good enough.

The bicep is still a little large, along with everything else, but I'll trim it further once he's together. Really it was pretty easy, I just used the Exacto and the tiny GW files. I've got lots of larger Ork arms to use as a visual reference for muscles, and Grot arms too! Really it's just a matter of copying what you can see right in front of you (no anatomy knowledge required).

Admittedly, I was quite intimidated when I started, but it was actually pretty easy. Originally he had some stick grenade at his waste, but that got in the way so it had to go too.

Again I failed to take a before and after, but this works. To be honest I think the whole thing is going to work!

Grot Walker Concept Art

I'm going to be starting a new project soon and I though I would sketch out some concept art for it. I started by ripping this excellent GW picture (all credit to them). It will be based on the Imperial Sentnel Scout walker.

The plan is to have a Sentinel Scout that has been captured by Gretchin (or as I like to call them Grots). The sketch is admittedly a little rough, but it more or less gets the point across. For some reason the Grots came out looking like radioactive rabbits, but I like where it's going. The Scout will be covered with battle damage and bits of corrugated steel, some kind of platform will exist on the back to hold more Grots. Grots will be hanging off all available parts, and the door will have been replaced by some kind of makeshift corrugated steel paneling. The roll cage will have been removed so that the occupant can be, "thrown clear", in the event that it topples over (safety first).

There might be a squig, or two as well, I don't know, it will depend on what I can dig up. The standard exhaust stack will have been replaced with something more ghetto, maybe some kind of after market "fart cannon", like the kids put on all their riced up cars. The whole operation should reek of Ork quality and attention to detail (or lack there of). I'm hoping that the final product conveys the same kind of feeling that my other Grot project achieved.

Stay tuned,
HMP

Ammo Runt

More paint was mixed! Yesterday I completed (almost) the "Ammo Runt". I think he's some sort of Snotling, or related diminutive  creature, perhaps some strain of mixed Goblinoid/Ork origin.

The role such creatures play in Ork society was at first a mystery to the Imperium, and early imperial scholars didn't recognize Snotlings as a separate race and instead thought they were baby Orks!

This theory was however completely debunked by High Inquisitor Ratcliffe in his publication titled "Lesser Greenskins" published in the journal Xenos Autem Exterminavi, the data for which he acquired from a drone on planet XC-42936 in the delta quadrant, prior to orbital bombardment/exterminatus.

Ratcliffe found that not only were Snotlings efficient at hauling around gear, those with large hindquarters also served as pre-warmed meaty snacks for hungry Boyz.

A Horde of Grots

I don't know if 10 constitutes a horde, but it'll have to do. This particular horde is probably equally dangerous to both friend and foe, so vanguard for them. I did some more work after I took these pictures, but they are finally, really, truly, done (almost).

Grots with Gunz

It's not clear if everyone can see; sounds safe.

Moon Clan

Note "Horns" is getting ready to mount up

Well that's all for now. I also finished the Boyz, so I'll be doing proper photos soon to update the "Gallery" pages.

Are they Grots or Gretchin?

So, which is it? Turns out it doesn't matter, especially after you attach 5 of them to one base, then it's just a mob.

Grot Mob

Gretchin Mob (see, no difference)

Awesome Checkers

Ugh, that bottle.

Surprise! Ork Skull
All right, one down and one to go...

Let''s Make A Gang

Denim, leather and patches, that's all you need to be a gang. Good thing because that's all these guys are going to get.

Moon Clan Grots!

So yeah, painting angry moons on the back of the denim, it's actually pretty fun. Some are more complete than others. If I keep adding stuff I'll never get them done. Maybe a deadline would help.

Nov. 1. Grots must be done!

There, I just made a deadline.

Der Goblin Komme

I dunno if "der" is the correct article for Goblin (is goblin even goblin in German?), it's just for fun, like adding random umlauts to words (thanks Lemmy). Anyhow, my mobile is finally repaired, so we're back, and like the title may, or may not, say, "the goblin come".

The Grots are almost finished, but before I do more I need to put them on their base. Basically each base will have 5 Grots, since one group is piggy backing, it's only 4 sets of legs, but the other is a bit congested.

Grots

Denim and Leather

War Cry

Bull Horns and Pot Head (copper eventually)

Everything must have checkers.

So yeah, deciding who goes where is what's next. I also think that the denim jackets should have the clan/gang logo on the back, we'll see. I think before I move on and finish them these decisions need to be made as it will determine what areas need work. Having so many figures on one base kind of means that you need to think about the composition, placement and lighting of the final group, not just the individual pieces.

The other problem with these figures is that they are all looking down and posed in odd positions; the base is going to require lots of terrain bits so that they all face relatively level. What enemy could a Goblin possibly be looking down upon? Ants?

Tonight is the miniature painting social night at my local game store. Looking forward to that. I'll probably bring a new piece as this project has too much going on to cart it around.

Where Taxi Drivers Go

So I've been working on the Grots, but I haven't been updating because my phone is still broken (it's been two weeks), and it's by far the faster way to work up the latest. Anyhow, I was working on the Grots and I was thinking about the color schemes, and it really made me laugh.

Pupils
I realized that the yellow combined with the black and white checkers, really reminds me of old taxis. That reminded me of the and old Seinfeld standup skit: "What's with the cabbies and the B-O?".

Taxi Driver?
I didn't think I had the skills to do the checkers thing, but then I had never really tried. Turns out I can do it! I started by painting 2 lines of  gray side by side, and then figured that this would be wide enough. It was.

More from Jerry "Are these shifts that long?" Bahahaha. Then it made me think, did Orcs and Grots evolve out of stinky cab drivers? In the 40th millennium the taxi shifts got so long that all the drivers turned green and lost it. They kept their love of yellow and checkers.

Fungus Brain with more pupils

Bahaha....

There will be more checkers here too.

Now that I've probably insulted every type of job based off driving for money, I should point out that it's all Seinfeld's fault. I should also point out that thanks to Uber and Lyft, most stinky cabs no longer exist.
