The Grot Walker "Accidents Happen"

It's done. I wasn't sure it was finished, but I painted the base rim black, so it must be done (I think that's a rule or something). Proudly presenting "Accidents Happen".

Our hero has commandeered an Imperial Guard Scout, he's had too much mushroom tea and it's got as heck of a blind spot...

Accidents Happen (Walker pt. 7)

More of a show and tell than a proper update (Ed. Thus is a stupid opening line, all blogs are show and tell, it's not fine litereture). I further developed the "TP-mache" lump, and applied a bunch of texture. Some grays on the rocks and bits, and Doom Bull brown on the "dirt". A whiff of Agrax here and there, and things were looking pretty good. There was some gentle drybrushing, probably with Zandri Dust.

The addition of the squashed comrade was either pure genius, or pure stupidity. To quite Bob Ross, "we dont make mistakes, we have happy accidents". Which brings us to the title of today's post, "Accidents Happen". Keen observers will notice that Dobby has been squished while facing the walker, but in he should have been charging the enemy... perhaps he heard a noise and turned, only in time to see the cause of his gristly death

I'm fairly certain that this is the perfect title for this piece. The reasons for this are twofold; 1) it correctly depicts the scene, and 2) it's how we arrived at the situation we currently find ourselves in.

Regardless of whether he should have been coming or going, he's not moving now.

So that about sums it up. Until next time. Dont miss good while looking for perfect. DMGWLFP

Scout Pt. 3

The strongest Grot in the world! This is what the title would be if it wasn't part of a series.

Today I decided to attempt to carve a grot arm out of a human arm. Sounds impossible, and that may be true, but as of right now it appears to be working.

I forgot to do a full before and after, but I have the left, right comparison, which is good enough.

The bicep is still a little large, along with everything else, but I'll trim it further once he's together. Really it was pretty easy, I just used the Exacto and the tiny GW files. I've got lots of larger Ork arms to use as a visual reference for muscles, and Grot arms too! Really it's just a matter of copying what you can see right in front of you (no anatomy knowledge required).

Admittedly, I was quite intimidated when I started, but it was actually pretty easy. Originally he had some stick grenade at his waste, but that got in the way so it had to go too.

Again I failed to take a before and after, but this works. To be honest I think the whole thing is going to work!

Ork Knobs WIP 2

Having more fun painting than blogging, so just a single photo...

Orks!

As with all Ork, checkers are very important.

Metro Entertainment Marine (and a troll)

The local shop gave me a couple Space Marines! As a thank you, I painted the "Metro Entertainment Space Marine". I also finished a big troll from BONES IV...

On the Workbench

Lots of silly things on the go. I've completed some "Screaming Fungus", the adventurers should have trouble sneaking into the goblins lair...

Orc vs Ork

There was a King tide today, so we ended up going to the beach and looking at the tide pools. This had a negative impact on the quantity of painting. Most of the model is color blocked, and the shoulder pads have seen the most attention.

Checkers are important

Black Pants

I also tried a new method for painting black. I started with black, then used Kantor Blue for the first edge highlight, and some kind of gray for the second highlight. It's the closest I've come to copying the GW style for black trousers.

Sergeant Gideon

Brothers, to me!

Look out punks, Blood Angel Terminators are coming in hot.

Space Hulk Terminators

It's been a while since I painted a Blood Angel, because the last time I tried to paint 6 at once, which probably brought in some kind of PTSD...

Improved Ork Flesh?

I've been working on the Gorkamorka Boyz, and with the ones with more skin I've changed up the mix a bit. Now it goes Dryad Bark, Waaagh Flesh, Warboss Green, Sarsnik Green, and then Averland Sunset mixed with the Sarsnik for the face highlights.

Sarsnik Green+ (I tried to put in muscle striations)

Old VS New

I might push the face highlights a little more...

Grots With Gunz

Apologies for the title, but given that "Boyz With Shootas", was the actual marketing name for the Boyz, I couldn't resist making up my own. Anyhow, a while back I bought some Grots, kinda toyed around with them, and then put them in the box of bits. Then, while modifying one of the Boyz to have another grenade, inspiration struck!

So I proudly present, Grots With Gunz.
Grots with Gunz

The really important question is how many I should try and pack onto each base? Two on a small round looks cramped and horde-ish.
2 Grots with gunz
While 4 on a large round is really beginning to look like a proper mob. I wonder how many more I can fit?

Leave a comment below and whatever gets the most votes is what we'll do. The options will be, 2 on a small base, or 4 or more on a larger base.

Gorkamorka Boy With Horns

Painting and playing games is all about having fun. Sometimes the "lore" is cool, but for some, "lore" becomes "law". Free yourself of the shackles of lore, and let chaos rule.  When looking at the photo below do not ask yourself "Where did an Ork get deer horns from?", instead ask "Why didn't he COME with deer horns?".

Chaos Cultists, the end is near (for real)

Well, we're almost done. Just need to add more dirt and grime and everything will be just fine. I think that these guys need some blood and gore to boot. The mace and club are good looking candidates.  Also, today's pictures are lit courtesy of mother nature, which is great.

I think I've captured the motley look.

As always, dont miss good while looking for perfect.

Cultist WIP Cont'd

It has been ages, but I haven't been completely idle. We'll just get straight to the photos.

Another Cultist

If your idea of preparing for war in the 41st millennium is a rain jacket and a one eyed gas mask, then you're just what the armies of chaos are looking for.
Chaos all the way

At least he's got one eye protected...

I think people try too hard to make Chaos guys look orderly, all matching uniforms and outfits. They're chaos for crying out loud! All order shall be abolished!

Chaos Cultists WIP

Here at HMP I'm not trying to sell anything, so that means that I can share everything, the good and the bad. Like the title says this blog is "Miniature Painting for Mortals", here is a prime example ot the type of work that mere mortals can achieve. I had to take a break from the swampy marsh, so I thought I'd have a go at one of my cultists (link). Previously I had mentioned how I was hoping to go for a "sand people" look. At the same time, I thought the skin should look a little sickly. Here's what happened.

Chaos Cultist

I like the gun

At the higher zoom, thing's look a bit dodgy
Work required, the skin is a bit too purple, and I went a little overboard on the copper patina on the fan.

Slightly out of focus... probably helps

So there you have it. Some parts are coming along, others need more work. Overall I think it's pretty cool, but maybe not exactly what I had envisioned. I like the heavy use of copper, as I think that cultists are supposed to be pretty rough around the edges.

On the Workbench

There's always things going on behind the scenes and this weeks mid-week (it started mid-week) update is just to show what's on deck. In no particular order, some GW cultists, some Scibor Dwarves (plus gross zombie) and a gigantic Cockatrice!
Games Workshop Cultists
I really like these guys, I'm thinking of doing a Star Wars "Sand People" kind of look with them. Particularly since they have all the right kind of masks and such.

Sand People?
The next batch of Scibor Monstrous Miniatures is also coming along. The Dwarf Lords are pretty cool, they just need more cleaning and tome green stuff before priming.

Sibor Dwarf Lords
Two weeks ago I was at a local shop and all the Games Workshop stuff was on for 50% off! I guess they're dropping it. Anyhow I did buy this giant Cockatrice. It's Citadel "Finecast", that everyone likes to hate, but it seems fine in this case, and at 50% off...

Giant Cockatrice
The cockitrice needs a lot more green stuff, and I'm not totally stoked that it's staring at the ground, but I think that with some creative base work it might turn out alright.

I do have some actual painting work in progress, but it's a surprise.

Brother "I have too many gems" Noctis

So, here's an update. I sat down to do some painting on the weekend (it was raining), and I thought that I'd be able to bang out all the gems. That didn't happen. In fact I just kept finding more, on this one guy! Even now there's two more on his upper back left shoulder that I completely missed! FML.
I think the knee is upside down...

Hip guards
The gun and the wrist turned out pretty nice
So many gems.
The ones on the side are annoyingly difficult

Blood Angels want YOU!

So that's all the news. This weekend will be good for painting too, I have to take care of A (she's having mouth surgery).
